St. Mary’s Glacier Property Owners’ Association (POA) sponsors the annual Community Slash Days. It typically lasts several days. Create or expand defensible space around your home and property. Drop your slash while improving the safety of your community.
What is slash? Slash is anything that is leftover after a tree is cut down. This includes tree tops, limbs, branches, etc… This material can be brought to slash days to be chipped and disposed of by the POA.
Disposing of slash is an important step in preparing your property for wildfires. Wildfire naturally occurs and serves as an important component of our montane and subalpine ecosystems in St. Mary’s.
However, during much of the last 100+ years, the campaign to “prevent wildfires” has led to the accumulation of hazardous fuels. What was originally intended to protect people and their structures, now puts us at risk. This risk is increasing as the climate changes and more people visit as well as call Clear Creek County home.
Due to a combination of high temperatures, low humidity, low rainfall, and often high winds, our Colorado fire season is starting earlier in the year and lasting longer into fall.
